Tarifa Salem at the 2019 Esmeralda Dance Studio Showcase
Tarifa Salem debuted her “Christmas Angel” choreography to the Loreena McKennitt version of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman” (Greensleeves) at the Esmeralda Dance Studio Student/Instructor Showcase. She created this choreography in memory of her beloved brother Jay who passed tragically in 1991. He loved everything Christmas. Tarifa attempted to herald the feeling of joy, magic and awe in which he exhibited every Christmas.

Tarifa performed her “Trance” choreography that exhibit hints of ritual dance in certain Eastern Cultures for the first time at this annual event. She includes elements of Zaar through the use of vibratory and collapsing qualities of movement as well as a Dervish like spinning so often seen in Sufi Dance. The music is “Smoking Camel on a Camel” by Coda.

Tarifa exhibits her versatility in this performance with her flowing “Lebanese Lyrical” choreography in contrast with her spicy “Raqs Abla” choreography in which she created to honor her Tita, Abla Farrah, who she credits as being her first dance teacher.
